GLP-1/GIP Peptide Treatment Frequently Asked Questions
We've compiled the most common questions to help you understand GLP-1/GIP medications and support for weight loss. Here you can find how this treatment works, what to expect during your journey, and how to achieve safe, sustainable results with professional guidance and support.

1. How do I get started with weight loss treatment?
At your consultation, we will review your medical history, weight-related medical conditions, and medications. If you are a good candidate and decide to start this weight loss journey, laboratory tests will be recommended to include: CMP, CBC, liver function tests (ALT/AST/ALP/bilirubin), lipid panel, BUN/creatinine/eGFR, fasting glucose, HbA1c (as indicated), thyroid panel (TSH, free T4, T3, TPO), and urine albumin/creatinine ratio (if diabetic). Each of these steps are important in understanding your individual body composition and in assessing your progress and success.

3. How do I store my medication?
Semaglutide+ Cyanocobalamin (B12) and Tirzepatide+ Niacinamide (B3), should be stored in the refrigerator. If left out at room temperature for short period of time this will not impact your ability to use the medication. We recommend you place them in a Tupperware style container to avoid the syringe being depressed and losing the medication.

5. Do you Provide Exercise & Nutrition Recommendations?
Any weight-loss plan should be paired with exercise and sound nutrition. Building these healthy habits will help you maintain your weight loss and stay at a healthy weight. Semaglutide/Tirzepatide therapy does initiate loss of appetite and hence, weight loss. It is important to be aware that once you stop the drug, if you revert back to a prior lifestyle, you will gain weight. Exercise 20-30 minutes at least 3 times a week. Those who exercise regularly enjoy an improved mood, increased energy, improved metabolism, stronger bones and muscles, lean body mass, and enhanced mobility. Daily protein intake is essential to losing the appropriate ratio of fat versus lean body mass.

4. I am having surgery. Can I still take my weight loss medication?
No, you should stop the weight loss medication approximately three weeks prior to your surgery due to the potential risk of aspiration. If it’s a minor procedure such as a colonoscopy this may be a shorter period of time. We defer to the physician performing your procedure. Please consult with the physician who will be performing your procedure and act accordingly.

6. I am going on vacation; how do I transport my medication?
For Vehicle Travel:
Place medication in a hard case like a Tupperware or a pencil box, making sure it is long enough such that the ends are not compressed, and the plunger would not have pressure so not to lose medication. Add an ice pack to keep them cold. Stop periodically if driving long distances to check temperature.

Yes, you must make an appointment with our Medical Director Dr. Lola Ogbonlowo, MD FAAFP, Dipl. ABOM, you will be sent a link at your initial consultation, select New Patient and New Patient Telehealth or in-person visit. You must be in the state of VA when executing the telehealth appointment. 11. I have taken several doses, and I have not lost any/much weight?
Some individual’s bodies are in shock from the sudden decrease in food intake and with this the body “holds on” to reserves, once the body realizes it will be getting nutrients daily just not as much as it did prior to the medication, it will release, and weight loss will increase.

12. I do not seem to be losing any additional weight even though I am on a stronger dose.
10% to 15% of patients are considered non-responders and lose 5% or less of their body weight. A re-evaluation is recommended. We will collaborate with you on dosing to attempt to stimulate weight loss.
Some people plateau and there is no known reason for this. We have options when this occurs and can discuss them with you on an individual basis.

13. I've hit my goal weight or have plateaued and wish to maintain my current weight, now what?
Maintenance after GLP-1 therapy is about protecting your progress and building a sustainable lifestyle. It’s not just about staying thin — it’s about staying metabolically resilient, hormonally balanced, and mentally empowered. Most patients taper down on GLP-1's gradually to avoid rebound hunger and regain staying on a lower maintenance dose for appetite control and metabolic support. This decision depends on your metabolic history, cravings, and regain risk — not just the number on the scale.
Importance of Gradual Discontinuation
When you and your healthcare provider determine that it is appropriate to decrease your Tirzepatide or Semaglutide, a gradual medication reduction, which can include discontinuation, schedule will likely be recommended. Gradually reducing the dosage and time between injections over a specified period allows your body to adjust and minimizes the risk of withdrawal symptoms or other adverse effects. It is important to follow the discontinuation plan provided by your healthcare provider and to communicate any concerns or difficulties experienced during the process.
Potential Side Effects of Stopping
It is important to be aware of potential side effects that may occur. These side effects can vary depending on factors such as the duration of treatment, the dosage being taken, and individual differences in response. Some common side effects may include:
-
Rebound symptoms: As your body adjusts to the absence of the medication, you may experience a temporary resurgence of symptoms related to the condition being treated. It is important to communicate these symptoms to your healthcare provider for appropriate management.
-
Withdrawal symptoms: Discontinuing the medication can lead to withdrawal symptoms, especially if the medication has been taken for an extended period or at higher dosages. These symptoms may include irritability, anxiety, sleep disturbances, mood changes, and flu-like symptoms. Your healthcare provider can provide guidance and support to manage these symptoms effectively.
It is important to note that the specific side effects experienced when stopping Tirzepatide or Semaglutide can vary among individuals. Your healthcare provider will guide you through the maintenance or discontinuation process, monitor your response, and provide appropriate support. Open communication with your healthcare provider is key to ensuring a smooth transition and minimizing the risk of adverse effects.
